What is the scope of God's love for us?
If you have ever felt the love of parents who embrace you, give you what you need and tell you that they love you, then you have not even experienced a fraction of God’s Love for you. For a baby, which you were at some point, your parents’ love was really nothing more than your need for them to meet your immediate needs – food and warmth. It was only when you got older that the idea of their love for you became more than a physical requirement – there was a stirring in your heart. They actually loved you. In a way. Then you met your first “love” and you thought you knew all about the subject. Maybe that first love did not last long. Maybe today you are still married to that first love. But even the love of a husband or wife does not come close to the love God has for us.
All along though, there is a caring Father who loved you more than you could ever know. You just did not know it then. He loves you now and His Love for you goes something like this:
His love is higher than the highest of mountains
His love goes deeper than the deepest of seas
His love, it stretches to the farthest horizon
And His love, it reaches to me
His love is stronger than the angels and demons
His love, it keeps me in my life's darkest hour
His love secures me on the pathway to heaven
And His love is my strength and power
His love is sweeter than the sweetest of honey
His love is better than the choicest of wine
His love, it satisfies the deepest of hunger
And His love in Jesus it's mine
- David Ruis
Just imagine this, the highest mountain – Everest. Have you been at the top of the world? God’s Love is higher than that. Imagine the deepest of seas – even our most modern technology does not allow us to explore the deepest part of the oceans, let alone us in human form. His Love for us is deeper than that. His Love for us goes beyond the horizon. You can continue walking as much as you want, east or west, and there will always be a horizon ahead of you. That is how far His Love for you stretches. Yet, His Love also reaches right here where you are.
We sometimes say “where angels fear to tread” but His Love is stronger than the mightiest angels or your worst demons. In your darkest hour, whatever the reason may be, His Love shines stronger and His Love is your beacon. His Love provides the way to heaven for you, if you accept His Love. His Love is my strength and power, right here, when all hope seems to be lost. His Love fed the multitudes who came to listen to Jesus’ teaching, many years ago. His Love feeds you hunger, and your deepest desires, today, if you will allow Him.
His Love is sweeter than honey – and nothing produced on Earth could be sweeter than that. The choicest of wine would have been that which Jesus produced when He performed His first miracle. His wine was perfect. His Love is in Jesus, and He can be yours.
Where did the writer of the song get his inspiration?
Mountains and seas:
Psalm 95:4-5 – In his hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are his also. The sea is His, for He made it, and his hands formed the dry land.
Furthest horizons
Proverbs 8:27 – I was there when He established the heavens, when He laid out the horizon on the surface of the ocean.
His Love reaches to me
1 John 4:10 – This is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.
Angels and demons
Isaiah 14:12 – How you have fallen from heaven, O Morning Star, son of the dawn! You have been cut down to the ground, O destroyer of nations. (God speaks here to the biggest demon of all, Satan.)
My darkest hour
Jeremiah 29:11 – For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.
Pathway to Heaven
John 3:16 – For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.
Strength and power
2 Samuel 22:33-35 – God is my strength and power and He makes my way perfect.
Sweetest of honey
Psalm 119:103 – How sweet are Your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!
Choicest of wine
John 8:10 – Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But You have kept the good wine until now.
Deepest of hunger
Psalm 63:3 – My soul will be satisfied as with the richest of foods; with singing lips, my lips will praise you.
His Love in Jesus is mine
1 John 4:10 – In this is love, not that we have loved God but that He loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins.
